What is the difference between mono and stereo sound for live events?

Speakers and Sound Systems

Mono sound sends the same audio signal to all speakers, so every person in the audience hears the same mix regardless of where they're seated. This is ideal for speech-focused events like conferences, keynotes, and panel discussions, where intelligibility matters more than spatial imaging.

Stereo sound splits the mix into left and right channels, creating a wider, more immersive soundstage. Stereo is preferred for music, video playback, and entertainment-driven events where spatial separation adds realism. The tradeoff is that people seated far to one side may hear a lopsided mix. Many events use a hybrid approach: mono for speech segments and stereo for music and video.
