What is a lighting console and what does it do?

Lighting Control and DMX

A lighting console (also called a lighting desk or lighting board) is the central control surface that a lighting programmer or operator uses to control every fixture in the rig. Modern consoles are essentially specialized computers with physical faders, encoders, buttons, and touchscreens optimized for programming and running lighting cues in real time.

The console sends DMX signals to all connected fixtures, stores programmed cues (preset looks, color changes, movements, effects), and lets the operator trigger them live during a show. The two dominant console platforms in professional entertainment are ETC Eos (widely used in theatre, broadcast, and corporate) and MA Lighting grandMA (dominant in concert touring, festivals, and large-scale live events). 4Wall stocks both platforms along with other console options in its console rental inventory.
