What is a gobo?

Moving Lights

A gobo (short for "goes before optics") is a thin disc, typically metal or glass, with a pattern cut or etched into it. When placed inside a moving light or ellipsoidal fixture, it projects that pattern onto a surface. Metal gobos project silhouette patterns (logos, window shapes, leaf breakups, geometric designs). Glass gobos can project full-color images and photographic detail.

Gobos are used for texture (projecting a leaf breakup pattern onto a cyclorama to simulate dappled sunlight), branding (projecting a corporate logo onto a wall or floor), and scenic effects (projecting window frames, star fields, or architectural details). Most spot and profile moving lights include two gobo wheels: one fixed and one rotating, which allows animated effects like spinning patterns or flowing water textures. You can purchase them online from sites like NewLighting.com.
