What are the different types of projector light sources?
Projector Basics & Light Sources
There are three main types of light sources used in modern projectors: lamps, LEDs, and lasers.
Lamp-based projectors use either UHP (Ultra High-Performance) lamps or Xenon arc lamps. UHP lamps are compact and efficient with good brightness consistency, but they run at a cooler color temperature (7,000-8,000K) and have a limited lifespan. Xenon arc lamps produce well-saturated colors in the daylight spectrum and are common in cinema, but they require high power, have poor lumen maintenance over time, and will flicker as they approach end of life.
LED projectors use red, green, and blue LEDs to create a wide color palette, but this technology isn't widely used in large-venue projection. Laser projectors are the current standard for professional events and are available in three configurations: blue laser diode, laser phosphor hybrid (red and blue laser diodes), and RGB laser (three individual-colored lasers).
