What is projection mapping?

Projection Techniques and Applications

Projection mapping is a technique where video content is precisely mapped onto a three-dimensional surface so that the projected image aligns perfectly with the physical contours of the object. This turns buildings, stage sets, sculptures, vehicles, and even natural features into dynamic display surfaces.

It works by using specialized software to create a digital model of the physical surface, then warping and masking the content to fit the object's geometry. When executed well, the result makes the object itself appear to transform, animate, or dissolve. Common projection mapping software includes Disguise, Pixera, Resolume, and MadMapper.

Blink Festival used projection mapping across multiple cities and structures in unique and creative ways.
