BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE (BI) SPECIALIST

JOB DESCRIPTION

General Summary: 

The Business Intelligence (BI) Specialist plays a critical role in designing, developing, and maintaining data-driven solutions that support business operations. This position requires strong full-stack development experience—particularly in MS SQL, ColdFusion, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript—along with solid understanding of data warehousing, ETL processes, and BI practices. The ideal candidate will have a foundation in end-to-end BI development and demonstrate the ability to contribute to both technical implementation and strategic planning within the BI team.

Responsibilites of this position: Duties include but are not limited to:

Strategy & Planning

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define and implement BI strategies that align with business objectives.
  • Assist in setting long-term BI development goals with scalability in mind.

Development & Implementation

  • Design, develop, and optimize MS SQL databases, stored procedures, and ETL processes.
  • Maintain and enhance ColdFusion applications to support data-driven functionality and dashboards.
  • Build interactive front-end components using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for internal BI tools.
  • Ensure data integrity, governance, and best practices across all BI solutions.
  • Develop and document data models, metadata, and custom reporting logic.
  • Integrate BI tools and applications with enterprise systems for streamlined data access.

Operational Support & Optimization

  • Troubleshoot issues related to data processing, application performance, and reporting workflows.
  • Implement and maintain best practices for database tuning and data quality assurance.
  • Monitor and enhance ETL pipelines to efficiently move and transform large datasets.
  • Provide technical support and training to promote self-service BI adoption and data literacy.

Growth & Leadership Development

  • Collaborate with the Director of BI for mentorship and continuous skill development.
  • Expand technical expertise across BI systems and full-stack development practices.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) in BI development, integration, and architecture.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3–5 years of experience in BI development, data warehousing, and reporting solutions.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS SQL (queries, stored procedures, performance tuning).
  • Experience developing and maintaining ColdFusion applications.
  • Strong front-end development skills using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Experience with ETL processes and integrating data from multiple sources.
  • Solid understanding of data governance, security, and compliance best practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certifications in Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Experience with ColdFusion (or willingness to learn quickly).
  • Exposure to web- or cloud-based BI and data analytics solutions.
  • Familiarity with project management methodologies (Agile, Scrum, etc.).

Physical Requirements

This position's job duties and tasks require the employee to sit regularly. The employee may choose to stand and move within their working area. Regular use of computer monitors and a keyboard/mouse will be required.  The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 20 pounds. Other physical requirements of the job include the ability to communicate. Generally, the employee will be in a temperature-controlled work environment for general comfort.

Availability

  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends as required.

Position Location and/or Territory and Travel

  • This position can be remote.
  • Preference for candidates in Pacific or Mountain time zones to align with business hours.
  • Occasional travel may be required for training, meetings, or team collaboration.
