Price Fighting: Compare New vs. Used with 4Wall’s E-commerce Sites

by Wes Bailey, 4Wall Marketing

It’s one of the great questions in life: Do I buy new or used? Most of us face this question in numerous places whether it is in regards to cars, furniture, or video games.

Unfortunately when it comes to the lighting industry, comparing new and used fixtures against each other has not been as easy as pulling up Auto Trader and looking at Ford Fiestas…until now!

One of the great new features we have integrated in our websites is a “Compare” button. While browsing UsedLighting.com or NewLighting.com, if you find an item you are interested in, right below the picture and above the item description we offer a link to “Compare with New” or “Compare with Used”.

This link allows you to pop open another window which will compare the item with a new (or used) counterpart. Description and pricing info are all included in this window, and you may even find brokered options from our members.

Whether you are a worship arts pastor or a busy theatre LD, we think comparing new and used items all in the same place will make your life a bit easier. Visit UsedLighting.com or NewLighting.com and give it a try today!

Behind the Scenes of “HA, Breath of Life”

by Brent Pritchett, 4Wall Systems Team

“HA, Breath of Life” Premiered this last August in the Pacific Theater at the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie, Hawaii, and has received rave reviews from its guests and local community.  Here are a few facts about the show, including gear provided by us here at 4Wall:

The people:

Brent Pritchett- Lighting Designer/ 4 Wall Entertainment Project Manager

Sak Yalimaiwai- Technical Director

George Pasi- Master Electrician

Craig Freebairn- Owner of Nalu Electric who installed the Color Kinetics fixtures

6- Color Kinetics C-Splash

6- Color Kinetics Color Bursts

90- Color Kinetics Color Blast Power Core

3- High End System DL.3

16- Used 36 degree Source 4

25- Used 14 degree Source 4

22- Used 10 degree Source 4

40- Used source 4 PAR

The Reason for used gear:

The theater, which is only a few hundred yards of the ocean and is an open air venue has some of the harshest conditions for equipment I have ever seen. As lights heat up and cool, the humid salt air condenses on the top of the fixtures causing them to begin rusting within a couple of months after being hung. Even with routine cleaning, the top of a light fixture will become coated with a layer of salt because of the climate. Because of this, the Center wanted to have lightly used equipment supplied when possible to get the reduced cost as a used fixture lasts the same amount of time as a new one.

The reason for the LED’s:

The Pacific theater has a 55 foot man made mountain as its backdrop to the stage which has many walkways and passages for performers to appear from at different parts of the show. There are many different effects housed in the mountain including fire volcano’s, water cannons, water fountains, and water falls all which needed reliable lighting that would handle the conditions. The Color Kinetics Color Blast Power Core became the fixture of choice to fit the conditions and give the accents that were needed to make the mountain a dynamic part of the production. The color options is really what made this fixture the perfect fit as there are times the mountain needs to be very colorful and the focus of the show, and others when it is a soft accent to the action on the stage below.

The Reason for DL.3’s

During the creation of “HA, Breath of Life” the Center wanted to stay true to the cultural roots they represent but be able to portray the cultures utilizing current technology and keep the spectacle the show has been known for. During the opening scene, a 60 foot tall by 30 foot wide kabuki silk screen falls from the sky and is projected onto using custom animations to help unfold the story line. Through out the show the projectors are used for rain, water, and fire effects. These three lights are constantly in use. Ether helping tell the story on side sells during transitions, or as an effects projector on different parts of the mountain or stage, they have been one of the best technical updates to the show.

Different facts:

- The show runs 6 nights a week and has never taken a break. Even when mounting the new show, the old show had to be maintained and all work on the new show could not interrupt the closing show.

- There are approximately 600 lights used in the production.

GDS LiteWare HO

LiteWare HO

by John Hathcock, 4Wall DC

How is one silver box going to change how you think of all-weather up lighting?  If it’s anything like what we’ve seen, it’s going to turn it on its side and shake it good.  Global Design Solutions has upgraded their LiteWare UL to an 80w RGB LED Array and created the LiteWare HO…and it ROCKS!

A well-crafted solution from start to finish, the LiteWare HO is everything you could ask for in a battery powered uplight.  It features a chrome/polished finish to blend into any environment.  It has a 6 to 12 hour lifespan per charge (6 hours to charge) with a sealed lead-acid battery.  That means no battery memory and no maintenance required.  You can also run the unit in any orientation.

LiteWare features an industry first with its custom designed charging flight case: drop in the light, plug in the road case, and charge up to 6 UL or HO units at the same time! Talk about a time saver!

LiteWare is also equally as home out in the rain as it is in a stately ballroom.  It features an IP-45 rating standard.  Add to this built in color control and wireless DMX and you have the ultimate drop and go solution for any event.

Rounding out the package is a Kensington™ laptop lock compatible security port (cable not included) so you can secure your lights on site.  This gives you peace of mind that someone’s not going to walk off with your LiteWare HO’s.

LiteWare HOThere are very few times a year that a product will come along and make you go: Hmm, that’s cool! The LiteWare HO is definitely one such product.  The LiteWare series is wrapping up to be a contender in the LED uplight arena. Now, mind you its little brother, the LiteWare UL has been in the US for a while.  In my opinion, the LiteWare UL just wasn’t there when it came to output.  The HO makes up for this in strides.

So, whether you’re looking for a weatherproof uplight or a sleek, rechargeable option, the LiteWare HO fits the bill nicely. Call us or email to set up a sales demo today!

Welcome to the 4Wall Blog!

The time has come.  We’re breaking down the 4th wall (sorry, couldn’t resist) and launching this blog thing:

Welcome to the official 4Wall Entertainment blog.  A “work box” full of industry resources, articles, reviews, and just plain lighting fun; we hope over the weeks you’ll come to find us a welcome addition to your online reading.  To kick it all off we would like to mention a couple of upcoming events at 4Wall Entertainment:

The Martin Professional “A Brighter World” Road Show will be hitting 4Wall NY on Wednesday July 14th.  This free demo has already been seen at 4Wall LV and was quite impressive.  Some of the fixtures on tap to be seen include the Mac 350 Entour LED Profile and Mac III Performance.

The upcoming weeks will also offer two chances to see the Wybron Mobile Showroom.  The first will be held July 20th at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT.  The second will be held August 3rd at 4Wall DC.  Stop by either of these events for a brief lighting seminar and more.

Be sure to check back here (or follow us on Facebook and Twitter) for the latest updates from the world of 4Wall!
